ruby tuesday manitoban fire engine

http://workofthepoet.blogspot.com/

on a hot july day the little red car drove us to the air force base that used to be my home..
we arrived to find the old red fire engine in a junk filled field.

the poor little thing looked like just a broken toy..

here i stood beside the fire engine that dad golden had worked on and even driven!..the little red car was determined to stand along side of it too for a picture and so was bernie.

here is the deserted front seat with the steering wheel intact and even some of the dials.

oh how empty that front seat looked...so deserted and lonely and still so yet clean!

oh how i respected dad golden even more than ever as i looked at those many dials and gages..dad golden doesn't know the first thing about computers but oh how smart he must of been in those manitoba days when he worked as a fireman...a fireman who saved people and burning planes and buildings!

bernie took most of these pictures and the little red car and i had no idea what the things were, although this does look like part of the engine...a now forever silent engine.

it looks just like someone has poked the eyes out of the poor little fire engine. empty holes now where once there were lights that guided the firemen to the places they were needed to save people from the fires.

this is a nice back view of the truck. i can remember when two or three men would be standing on the back as they drove along.

this fire hydrant has surely seen better days

i think if the government really cared, they could at least fix this fire engine, paint it up and put it into a museum!

your guess is as good as mine as to what THIS is!

this fire hydrant is neither fit for man....

nor dawgs!

i guess this is where the hose used to go but for all the world, i think this looks like a little red face with white eyes and a mouth that is saying "oh"!

that bernie is getting as many pictures of dad golden's friend as he can!

this must have been the number of the fire engine, i imagine that some of the rivers kids whose dads worked for the air force fire fighters would know which truck their dads worked in but the only thing i know is that dad golden was fire fighter number ten. and also all i know is that we children were very proud of him.

bernie sure did take some strange pictures!

this looks like some kind of jack but i don't know me.

ah! look at the beauty of that tire. it still looks in good shape!

the tractor standing beside the truck is not part of the base history, i really do believe that it is used by the owners of the broken up base for the cows that are now being pastured in the grassy fields where there used to be houses and where little children's feet ran and played in the hot summer days and where those same little feet skated on the home made frozen skating rinks in the winter!

some parts of the black water hoses can be seen on the fire truck.

i guess this is a warning sign for the cars that used to follow the fire truck...alas! never to be heeded again!

now i am just wondering if some former fire man has engraved this red fire engine with his name?

i guess bernie really admired those tires..here is another shot of one.

this looks way too interesting but i sure don't have a clue what it is!

oh! more bewilderment for me!

some kind of pressure wheel?

dials of course that only a fireman would know what for!

more dials...

and pumping instructions...

one giant dial.

two medium, two small and one missing dial.

man there is so much to know!

no idea...not a one!

Dearest Terry,
what a formidable job you and Bernie have done to honor and preserve the memory of this fire engine.
This goes far beyond Ruby Tuesday.
I certainly hope the right peopel are alarmed and can find a way to rescue the rescuer.
There are so many different historic societies. At least one should be engaged in this work.
Just see how they are working down in Jacksonville where John Cowart lives.

Now I hope you are not too tired to celebrate your big day, dear fourty-niner.
That would be too sad.
From Felisol

Oh if only it could talk...to tell us its stories from the past.

My R T is posted. It's a small 2 minute video I compiled for You Tube about "Flamingo Fandango". Come visit if you can!! Happy day.

NOW THAT is really cool! I would be tempted to buy it and park it outside of my house in the yard as decor! From a Photographer's point of view I bet my HUB would've been in hawg heaven! He once photographed an old truck in a field, next to a barn with wildflowers growing all around it. It is framed and hangs in our living room!

I dropped by to wish you a very Happy Birthday, too! I was looking for a fire engine red cake at the end of your post. I hope you got a cake? I'm sorry you are so tired on your birthday. Is this your 60th? (I checked your profile.)

dear felisol...it wasn't too hard of a job to do. bernie took some nice pictures and we visited the base two times because there were so many pictures to take!
i really do hope that the right people would take the cause up and save this fire engine!

hootin' anni...i am going to tell you three stories that this fire engine has buried in its memory.
1...one time my sister, betty who was soooo proud of dad golden told the kids, "Watch this!"
we were on the outside of the school yard where was located a fire alarm.
without a thought, she pulled that alarm....within minutes the fire engine with dad golden in it arrived.
now betty has always been a good girl. teddy, gary and i were the rascals.
that was the first and last time that i ever saw dad golden mad at my older sister...not a pretty sight!
2. one time that dad golden was a bad boy. he wanted to stay home and he didn't go to work.
they never noticed he wasn't there.
well that very evening, we children were in a little trailer where was a whole lot of other kids listening to bible stories and the pool hall next door caught on fire.
well what could that dad golden do but phone the fire station, and lo and behold when the firemen came they looked at dad golden and said, "hey goldie what's ya' doin'?
aren't you supposed to be workin'?
ha!...busted!
3. now this is more than one incident...a few times that fire engine had to answer the call of duty when the little boys in the base put a magnifying glass to the scorched dry grass in the fields!
way not nice, eh? especially when two of the said little boys had the last name of golden!

yes connie..you are such an antique lover and i can just imagine you displaying this truck!
next year when your hubby goes fishing in manitoba, tell him to go to rivers and pick up this ruby red fire truck and bring it right home!..ha!

trish, do they have fancy fire engines in tennessee?
i just wish that you will be able to visit your beloved tennessee just like i finally was able to visit my beloved manitoba.
it is so important to remember your roots and visit them once in a while!

thank you amelia for your wishes to me...you never forget.
i am behind in my birthdays and anniversaries because of that long trip out west but hopefully, i will get caught up!

amrita...you have wished me a happy birthday so many times.
you are such a sweet friend and i promise i will be catching up to you soon....love terry

Since I've been married to a retired Fireman for 43 years, these are very special pictures to me. I'm sure he could identify a lot of those dials and gadgets! It is so sad to see it sitting in a field, at the least, it should be cleaned up and put in a park for kids to sit on and dream of one day becoming a Fireman!
Happy Birthday to you my sweet friend, and remember this...you'll always be younger then me!

It would be lovely if someone could write a childrens book about the little fire engine getting all fixed up like new and returning to service :) Lovely post and great pictures, Bernie.

Dear Terry,
Happy Birthday on the 25th. I got the little tip from Amrita, and meant to send you an email... but I do wish you all the best for the new year that is ahead of you.

You are a dear and kind blog friend.

This is such a good post . What memories of dad golden it brings to your heart.

You surely were proud of him.

I hope someone from your place will have the plan to repair this truck and put it in a museum. Maybe you can write your governor or mayor.

Blessings on your day.

Love
Lidj

Happy Birthday to You!

This is embarrasing but the you-know-who who always gives us a tip off of course didn't tip us off for her own. Of course not.

I do hope your birthday was happy and that your health is steadily improving. And I do also hope you didn't over do things with that long holiday, trip and all.

Now, the fire engine. I am thinking Bernie was going to give you a years worth of posting for RT and here you squandered them all in one big long post.

I also think that Bernie wants to buy the engine and park it in the back yard. He would have fun playing on that.

If he doesn't get the whole engine he could buy a part of it, maybe the control panel that he seemed to like so much and perhaps the engine, steering wheel, and dash board.

I did see from one of the gauges that it is a French made machine. Until I got to that I had been wondering because I have never seen one like it in the states.

It must be a 1930's or 1940's machine, does Pop Golden concur?
I am sure that man is sad when he looked at the pictures.

Once more, Terry, Happy Birthday Dear Terry! And happy belated RT. I did not see your sign in on Mr. Linky. I don't think you saw mine either.
But now I have found yours, it is very nice.

These pcitures, especially the red fire truck ones are priceless. It's a wonder that someone hasn't made off with these treasures a long time ago. Thank you for treating me for your birthday today.
